Fisherman's Park

Susquehanna River

This ramp is quite steep and there is little maneuvering room if you are trying to launch from a trailer. As soon as you see this ramp you will understand what trouble it could be. In fact, there is a sign that says "   TRAILER LAUNCHES" and we can guess that the word that has faded (or been scratched out) is "NO".

Anyone operating a boat in this area should exercise considerable caution. This ramp is only about a half mile below the hydroelectric plant at Conowingo dam, and the water level and currents can vary significantly over the course of a day, as adjustments are made in the amount of water coming through the turbines. The level of the river just below the dam is available from the National Weather Service, and the graph there usually shows a significant daily variation.

Fisherman's Park, maintained by Exelon, is a popular place for fishing and birding. The fish coming through the dam are attractive to bald eagles, and there are many to be seen in the area. This is also a great place to come to see the dam after heavy rain upstream, when many flood gates of the dam are open.
