Broad Creek Public LandingBroad Creek, Conowingo Reservoir |
This is a small ramp owned by Harford County, and parking is quite limited. The ramp provides access to a shallow inlet of Broad Creek. There is no charge for use of the ramp, and no facilities. If you are headed north on MD 623 (Flintville Road), the access is on the right just before the Broad Creek bridge. Broad Creek is a flooded river valley, a sort of estuary of the Conowingo Reservoir (which is non-tidal, of course), with steep wooded sides and homes and cabins lining the shore. Once you leave the little inlet with the ramp, you can turn right to go out to the reservoir or left to go under the MD 623 bridge and upstream. In a small boat you can follow Broad Creek upstream about a mile before you encounter rocks. The Broad Creek area is quite pretty in the fall when the leaves are changing. The area flooded in the late 1920s after Conowingo Dam was built and the reservoir filled. There are some pictures of the Broad Creek area before the dam was built at the Conowingo Lake web site; scroll to the bottom of the page. Note that at one time there was an aqueduct of the old canal over Broad Creek, and that Broad Creek itself was dammed up. The remnants of all of those old structures are now underwater. |
